Matthew Shipp enjoys a rich and varied career as a performer and teacher. He performs frequently as a guest musician with The Philadelphia Orchestra, among other distinguished ensembles including the National Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Ballet, Columbus Symphony, Quad City Symphony Orchestra, Reading Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Princeton Symphony, and Symphony in C.
As a guest musician at The Philadelphia Orchestra, Matthew has performed domestically and on two international tours (2019 & 2024), including concerts in Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and China. Notable engagements include performances at venues including Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall, National Centre for the Performing Arts (Beijing), NHK Hall, Seoul Arts Center, and the National Performing Arts Center of Taiwan.
Mr. Shipp has been fortunate to play under the batons of the world's leading conductors, including Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Marin Alsop, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Paavo Järvi, Gianandrea Noseda, Jeri Lynn Johnson, Rafael Payare, William Eddins, Christoph Eschenbach, and Mark Russell Smith. Furthermore, Matthew has performed alongside several of the world's most illustrious soloists, including Joshua Bell, Hilary Hahn, Seong-Jin Cho, Hélène Grimaud, Sir András Schiff, Haochen Zhang, and Inon Barnatan.As a chamber musician, Matthew performed the Mozart Serenade No. 10 Gran Partita and the Dvorak Serenade for Wind Instruments, cello, and double bass in D minor on tour with The Philadelphia Orchestra in Tianjin, China. Matthew has also performed the Beethoven Wind Octet Op.103 with members of The Philadelphia Orchestra as a co-presenter at the CBDNA 2020 Conference. Additionally, Matthew was a featured soloist in Mozart's aria "Deh vieni, non tardar" with the Temple Chamber Winds at the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) International Conference. Matthew has spent summers participating in music festivals such as the Round Top Festival Institute and the New York Symphonic Ensemble's Tour of Japan.
Matthew's musical journey has been enriched immensely by extensive study under the guidance of Peter Smith, whose mentorship has proven to be invaluable in shaping his artistic path. While studying with Mr. Smith, Matthew also earned a Master of Music degree from Temple University. A native of Iowa, Matthew studied with renowned pedagogue Andrew Parker at the University of Iowa, laying the foundation for his musical endeavors in Philadelphia. Matthew would also like to acknowledge others who have helped, guided, or inspired him along the way, including Erin Hannigan, Nicholas Stovall, Philippe Tondre, Jonathan Blumenfeld, Elizabeth Starr Masoudnia, and John Symer.
